Senior Care

This course is designed to enable all care staff to understand the various common conditions that can affect the elderly. To be able to recognise early symptoms and to ensure that the care they give is appropriate and sensitive to the clients needs.

Learning Outcomes

The course is attendance certificated and will count towards Unit O1, O2, Z1, CL1 of NVQ Care Levels 2 & 3.

On completion of the course delegates wil:

• Be aware of the common medical conditions affecting the elderly

• Be able to recognise early symptoms and give appropriate care

• Be able to report changes in client health to a senior

• Understand the reasons for client actions related to medical conditions

This course covers the following topics:-

• Prostate
• Arthritis
• Cataracts
• Glaucoma
• Hearing Difficulties
• Skin Care
  • Pressure Sores
• Hodgkin’s Disease
• Diabetes

The training provides some medical knowledge of the conditions covered but concentrates on early signs of the conditions and how the symptoms can affect the client, carer and relatives.

The course contains group exercises where carers can discuss medical conditions they deal with and strategies used to give appropriate care. Practical advice is given on how the conditions affect the role of the carer & the effects of prescribed medications.

In-house courses are available groups of up to 15 candidates.
