Drugs & Medication Awareness:

This three hour course covers the common medication used for conditions associated with elderly patients and their effects including safe administration. The course can be adapted to suit the specific policies and practices in the customers organisation.

Course Programme

This course covers the following topics:-

• The range of different types of medicine and the benefits of the effective use of medicines
• Understanding the key risks that may be associated with medicines
• Recognising medical terms used within the care environment
• Key regulations covering the administration of medicines within the care environment
• Recognising the range of support needs that different clients may have with taking medication
• Recognising your role in supporting safety, effective use of medicines and independence when supporting clients with medication
• Administering medicines to clients
• Storing medication
• Disposing of medication
• Managing controlled drugs
• Record keeping
• Actions to be taken in the case of adverse reactions
• Obtaining information about commonly prescribed medicines
• Understanding the medication and special needs of different client groups including the elderly and clients with mental health needs
• Demonstrating the characteristics of medicines used in your own workplace
